Sr Rita Apura CSFN recently became an Australian citizen in an online ceremony. We sat down to talk about what Australia and being an Australian citizen mean to her.
What is it like for you to live in Australia? What do you like most about this country?
I consider myself very lucky to be able to live in a country which provides opportunities, and the opportunity to see the beauty of people coming here. Australia is a multicultural country, and a welcoming country. And wherever you go, Australia is the only country that will greet you, “How are ya mate?” without even waiting for an answer. It’s a beautiful way of welcoming.
What is your favourite Aussie food?
Tim Tams, but only the original flavour! I also love lamb on the barbie and lamingtons.
What does it mean for you to be an Australian citizen?
Being an Australian citizen is a privilege, but also carries responsibility. As a citizen, what can I contribute to this beautiful Land Down Under? Since I have become a citizen, I feel even more responsible to look after Australia and its land.
